NORRIS FINISHES 32nd AT KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY
Sparta, KY – A strong run ended in disappointment for Eric Norris and Green Light Racing at the Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway. Norris, driving the Pavestone Chevrolet Silverado, started the race in the 23rd position and raced his way to 12th before a broken drive shaft ended his night.
Even though it was Norris’ first start at the 1.5-mile track, it didn’t take long for him to start moving towards the front. During the first 25 laps, he passed five trucks and reported that the truck felt really good. Norris continued to pick off positions, passing Brendan Gaughan for 15th place on lap 43. “I was having a lot of fun driving the Pavestone Silverado, “ says Norris. “It felt really good to pass all of those trucks and I had a lot of grip all the way around the track, especially in turns 3 and 4.”
When the caution came out on lap 46, Norris was running in 13th position. During the pit stop, several lug nuts were not tightened and the truck had to be brought back down pit road. Norris would restart the race on lap 50 in the 22nd position. Two laps later, five trucks collided in front of Norris in turn two. He was able to negotiate the Pavestone Silverado through the wreckage without any damage. Norris was concerned that he flat spotted the tires, but after a pit stop, it was determined that the tires were fine.
The green flag flew again on lap 58 and Norris resumed his charge to the front of the field. By lap 72, Norris was closing in on the Top 10. While racing Jimmy Spencer for 12th place, Norris reported a vibration. Moments later, the Pavestone Silverado began to slide towards the back stretch wall. Norris saved the truck, just slightly damaging the right rear quarter panel. He took the truck back to the garage, where it was determined that the drive shaft had broken. Grease had leaked out of the rear end gear, causing the truck to slide in it. The team determined that it was very likely that the race engine had over revved, potentially damaging it and attempting to fix the truck was not a good option. “We had a great run going, “ says Norris. “I really felt that we had a top 10 for sure, maybe even better.” While disappointed, he has a lot of optimism for the future. “It was the best I have ever felt racing in the truck series,” he says. “I can’t wait to get out there and do it again.”
Norris’ finish was worth $10,990 in race purse money. Norris and Pavestone will rejoin Green Light Racing for the Las Vegas 350 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on September 24th, 2005.
